Awe at the incredibly large and beautiful environments, and boredom at the slow, intractable grind. It’s these conflicting feelings of awe and boredom that affect the player of Vendetta Online. Sure, there are a few supermassive black holes, but by definition space is sort of filled with nothing. The more players, the better.īackground:white">The other thing about space, though, is that not much happens there. It’s no wonder then that MMO developers have latched onto space as a setting. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is.” If there are any other VO veterans, feel free to add to my list.To quote a great author of our time, “Space is big. So if you're reading this FD: go hire the two guys that kept the space-sim MMO candle burning when the big studios wouldn't make them. Since rare weapons can't be purchased at all stations, there's a higher sense of investment in your ship past the credit value. Since these can be stored, stations become small bases where you've stockpiled goodies. Giving the opportunity to loot someone's rare gun if you kill them. In combat, ship modules have a chance of floating as debris after destruction. This same mechanism keeps a log of who's come and gone, which gives me a lot more sense of community than "Sidewinder - 162, Hauler - 87" style datapoints. I think ED could/should implement this across the board between group/open (maybe solo) to allow non-sharded players to interact on a communication level. Every station has a chat room and shows you the other docked commanders. This goes for commodities, but also applies to ship modules. In VO everything exists as an inventory, and can be stored at various stations that charge a nominal fee for rent. Every non-ship-item in ED feels "fake" because of the instancing, and lack of persistent storage. This actually functions as matchmaking as well, as it pits players on opposite sides based on rank. The ships don't respawn, the fight eventually concludes, and participants on the winning side get a bonus. You can participate like a CZ, or get specific missions to participate. NPC battles of varied size will spawn at random along the borders of the nations. Of the 3 major factions, 2 are at constant war, the third is a mercenary group that can fight for either side. All of these missions apply and scale for a group, so people group up for the best reward:time ratio. Across the galaxy an Imperial guy might get a mission to stop me. For instance: I take a contract to deliver Copper for the Feds. These missions are mirrored on opposite sides. These include things like: escort an NPC convoy with random chance of piracy, deliver this component to X, or mine Y of Z mineral. As a new player in VO, every station will offer you 2-5 missions of each type (combat/trading/mining) depending on the station. The game is pretty dated at this point, but they nail some critical stuff E:D currently misses. When I was thirsty for ED and SC on the horizon, I sipped on VO to cope with my cotton-mouth. Unlike EVE, it focuses on fast FPS-style combat. If you haven't heard of it VO is an online Space Sim MMO that's been around about a decade.
